What you'll need:
1.  A Road King
® civilian model 1998 - 2001
2.  A Road King Police 1998 - present
3.  An FLHT civilian model 1998 - 2001
4.  An FLHTPI or FLHTPEI police model 1998 - present
5.  A "cruise compatible" carburetor or fuel injection system.  See below pictures for the "button"
6.  Maybe a replacement "idle" cable with a "roll-off" switch from Harley for your specific bike, depends on year, fuel system, and handlebars.  Go see your local Harley® dealer.  This replacement idle cable with a roll-off switch is required to make the cruise work.
7.  Our patented wiring harness. (See our Sales page for prices and availability.)

8.  Actual cruise control from Harley (see Application Chart for part number)
You  MUST  have an electronic speedometer with the "read" switch, or an electronic speed sensor to use the new cruise control for your bike.  Read below for explanation.
Cruisemount®, LLC is NOT affiliated with Harley Davidson®

Our Cruisemount® kit will work for your Road King® or Electra Glide® IF  you have the cruise control cable mounting bracket and "button" as shown in these pictures.  This is the vital determination if you can put cruise control on your bike.

---------------------------------------------------------
pin
Above is the "pin" type carb.  It's the old type. Does not work with any current cruise controls.  You're out of luck.  This is where the mechanical cable from the cruise control module connects, to operate the carburetor or injection system.
button
Above is the "button" type carb.  This button is where the cruise cable end hooks to.  The injection module uses this same "button".  You MUST have this "button" on the carb or injection module to use any cruise control available today from Harley.
placement
The mechanical cruise cable OUTER HOUSING mounts to the carb or injection in this hole with the slot.  This same system has been used for several years on carbs and injection modules.

Carbureted Softails
® can use our kit if you purchase a "carburetor conversion kit"  $55 from our order page.

Road Kings (civilian 1996 - 2001) and (Police 1996 - 2003)

What you'll need:
1.  A Road King
® 1996 - 2001 or Police 1996 - 2003
2.  Remove your console and look under it.  You need to find a WHITE wire with a Green stripe (speed sensor signal).  You also need to find a solid PINK (tach signal) wire (it may be BLUE with Orange stripe instead).  If you don't find the pink wire (or BLUE with Orange stripe) there is a way around that, but we need to know.
3.  A "cruise compatible" carburetor or fuel injection system.  See above pictures for the "button"
4.  Harley cruise control kit # 77183-02 purchased from Harley
®.
5.  A replacement "idle" cable with a "roll-off" switch from Harley click here for your specific Road King
®, depends on year, fuel system, and handlebars.  Go see your local Harley® dealer.  This replacement idle cable with a roll-off switch is required to make the cruise work.
6.  Our patented wiring harness.

Harley Davidson quit selling cruise control for anything before 2002.......

Here's what I know for sure.  There are distinct differences between the Road King and the radio equipped (Classic
®, Ultra Classic®) bikes, so read carefully

I looked at a carbureted 1995 FLHR.   I also looked at a 1988 carbureted FLHR.   They both have the third hole in the bracket on the carb to mount the throttle cable, idle cable, AND the cruise cable housing.  they also have the "pin" to attach the actual cruise cable that operates the carb.  This "pin" is on a somewhat flat plate that bolts to the end of the throttle shaft with a big nut.  This "pin" is about 1/4 inch long, and smaller than a pencil.

This "pin" is the old style, and has been replaced by a "button".  I don't know what year.  I know 1999 has the "button". All cruise controls available today only use the "button".  You MUST have both the bracket , or third hole, and the "button", or purchase a new FLH
® carb with them.    The new cruise kit from Harley® 77183-02 for FLHR® snaps onto the "button".

The cruise cable that mounts to and connects to the carb is called a "stepper" cable.  The parts books show this item with it's own various part numbers... some use the "pin" and some use the "button".  I do not know if the old ones that use the "pin" are still available, or if the old stepper cables will interchange with the new cruise.   Proceed at your own risk if you have the "pin".

I also looked at the Road King
® parts books back to 1996 and they use the same 6-place Duetsch connectors for the handlebar switches that are used today.  I have not looked before 1997.  The patented wiring harness that Cruisemount® includes with it's kit connects to these 6-place Duetsch® connectors on the motorcycle wiring harness, and the replacement handlebar switches included in kit 77183-02 for FLHR® from Harley®

In 2002 Harley
® started pre-wiring touring bikes (except police models) for cruise as a parts and accessory option.  According to the installation instructions for earlier cruises from Harley®, a wiring harness was included and was very complicated to install, cutting and splicing wires.  Cruisemount® accomplished the same end result without cutting or splicing.  Everything plugs in.  I DO NOT KNOW WHAT CONNECTORS ARE USED BEFORE 1996.

The earliest cruise instructions I have found are for 1994.  1994-1996 requires drilling the battery box to mount the cruise control module.  It also requires drilling the handlebar clamp for unspecified years.  I believe this was for the indicator lamps.  The new Road King
® cruise switches from Harley® included in 77183-02 already have these indicator lamps built in.  The cruise kits for 2004 DO NOT, as the indicator lamps are in the stock speedometers on most Softail® and in the tachometer for Electra Glides®. The cruise wiring is different, because of these lamps, and also because in 2004 Harley® went to "data stream" for RPM, ground speed, etc.

Some years require drilling the brake switch/starter mount bracket to mount the add-on cruise switches.  Our wiring harness eliminates that as there are no add-on switches, only replacement switches that now have cruise switches built in.

2001 and before had "add on" switches for the operation of the cruise control.  2002 and later included a complete new set of handlebar switches that had all new switches including cruise switches.  It appears to me that these new switches will work with at least as early as 1996...for the Road King
®.... BUT I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS.

2001 and earlier DO NOT have the "roll off" switch and therefore a new idle cable (with "roll-off" switch)
click here  will be required.  Cruisemount® supplies the correct cable for a Softail® only.  2002 and later touring bikes come with the correct cable (except Police bikes).  You will need to obtain the correct cruise compatible idle cable for your specific Road King, based on year, fuel system type and brand.  Below is the information from the FLHR® cruise control kits that are no longer available.  All of these cruise control kits are obsolete and listed only for your information.  This is for reference only and we make no guarantee as to accuracy.

We don't know what the differences in the idle cables are.  We do know that you must obtain the correct cable for your bike, based on year, fuel system and brand of carburetor or fuel injection, and handlebars.

After market LED brake lamp bulbs cause the cruise control to think that the brake is applied for Softails only.  Softails will need a Brake Bulb Simulator if you have LED brake lights.  We sell these.  Road Kings and Electra Glides do not have this problem and do not require a Brake Bulb Simulator for LED brake/tail lights.

FLHR
® get both left and right replacement handlebar switches and may be different than what you now have if you have the old "flat" switches.  But you are replacing both sides so it will look fine.  Road Kings will use cruise kit 77183-02 for civilian years 1997 - 2003.   77196-04 for 2004 - 2006 police bike, and 77197-07 for 2007 police bike, and 77197-08 for 2008 to present Road King Police bikes.

Road King Police 2004 - 2006
We have a wiring harness that we know works with cruise control kit 77197-04, but since police equipment is removed prior to selling to a civilian, we do not know what else you may run into.  Sometimes most of the police wiring is simply cut and the equipment is removed.  Sometimes the police wiring is "cleaned up" and most times it is not.  You will get replacement handlebar controls for both left and right sides.  Anything that has been wired to the "red" switches will not function with the new controls, such as "spot" lamps.  You will need to install a seperate switch for the spot lights, if not already done.

On the Police bikes you must hold the clutch disengaged to start the bike.  Warning: With the new switches this "safety" feature is disabled.  The engine will start if the bike is "in gear" and the clutch lever is released.

Road King Police 2007
We have a wiring harness that we know works with cruise control kit 77197-07, but since police equipment is removed prior to selling to a civilian, we do not know what else you may run into.

FLHP and FLHP-I Road King Police 2008 - present
We have a wiring harness that we know works with cruise control kit 77197-08, but since police equipment is removed prior to selling to a civilian, we do not know what else you may run into. The dealer must also "activate" the cruise in the ECM.  This can be done prior to installing the cruise and will not set any error codes.

You will agree to liability waiver when your order any product from Cruisemount, LLC.

Our wiring harness should be a "plug and play" installation with no cutting, splicing, soldering, tapping, but since it is a police bike and the original wiring has been modified, we make no guarantees.

FLHT civilian 1998 - 2001

Our wiring harness is a very clean installation that requires NO splicing, soldiering, tapping.  It is 100% plug in.

FLHTP and FLHTP-I  POLICE 1998 - 2007
Our wiring harness WILL required some splicing, done with either "t-taps" or "posi-taps".  We have found that some of these Police bikes are wired for cruise control, but it appears that the wiring was modified when built for Police.  Also, since some of the wiring has been cut off to remove the Police equipment, we cannot connect to it.  Therefore, we provide a harness that is complete for cruise control.  If your Police bike has some of the wiring for cruise control, you must disconnect the original cruise control wiring and install ours.  You will get only the right hand handlebar controls with cruise kit 77182-02 for years 1997 - 2003, or cruise kit 77196-04 for years 2004 - 2006, and cruise kit 77196-07 for year 2007.

FLHTPEI   Police Electra Glide  2008 - present
2008 and 2009 FLHTPI will use cruise kit 77196-08, and the cruise must be "activated" in the ECM by the dealer(this can be "activated" prior to installing the cruise and will not set any error codes).  This harness is very simple and requires no splicing for the cruise control.

On some years of Police bikes you must hold the clutch disengaged to start the bike.  Warning: With the new switches this "safety" feature is disabled on some model years.  The engine will start if the bike is "in gear" and the clutch lever is released.

You will agree to liability waiver when your order any product from Cruisemount, LLC.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You  MUST  have an electronic speed sensor to use any of the new cruise controls.
If your speedometer is mechanical instead of digital, cruise won't work!  You're done (sorry).  However, some years have a speed sensor on the back of the mechanical speedometer.  The mechanical speedometer cable drives the speed sensor.  This will work!

All
owners may have to drill the battery box to mount the cruise for year 1996 according to Harley cruise control installations instructions.
