The
pointer is pointing to the hole in the module that the additional
cruise
cable goes in. You must have this hole present for the cruise to
work on your bike.
The
existing cable shown in the bottom of this picture is the idle
(rolloff) cable that
will be replaced with the new cable (we supply) with a switch in it. |
| Get
a service manual |
A service manual
will be helpful,
and
is advised, but not absolutely required. You should have one for
any type of repair. The cost of the service manual will be saved
many
times over during your ownership of your Harley. |
| Things
you need to get |
****
Critical point *****
1. You definitely will need di-electric
grease, and
some thread lock
(Loctite®),
2. You probably
will need a new hose
clamp for the fuel line, and more wire ties.
3. You also will need the actual cruise control from Harley
Davidson. Exact part number depends on your year and model.
4. More
"e clips" that hold the cruise cable housing to the injection
module. The Harley Davidson cruise control kit comes with
only one. They can be difficult to install and I personally have
lost 4 trying to get one installed. They are small and tend to
fly away and can't be found when I fail to get one installed. The
Harley part number is 11193 and they cost about 50 cents each.
5. Towels to protect your paint.
6. A service manual is money well spent.
7. There is a remote
possibility you might need a 1/4" national coarse threading
tap and a driver, a
5/16'" drill bit and a drill. Plan ahead. Do it when you
have time
to spare and don't need to ride if you have trouble. |
| Plan
ahead |
First things
first. This
should take from four to six hours if you do it by yourself so plan
ahead. Don't do it on a Sunday when the hardware stores are
closed, or on Monday when your Harley dealer is closed.
Your Harley
dealer should be
able to do this in three hours or less. Also, now is the time to
think about upgrading you hand grips since you will have the right side
off.
Also, chrome switch covers are available for the Road King
switches. Now is the time to replace them if your thinking of
doing
that. These things will add additional time to the installation,
but if you are thinking of adding these upgrades, you can save some
labor
time (and therefore money) now. You only have two hands. It
works much better with two people. |

summary |
The basic steps
are:
1. Before all else, do you have the security system, know your
code and how to reprogram it if the code is lost or you are locked out
when you disconnect the battery? Our two test bikes had no
problem, but that is not a guarantee that you will not!
2. Let the engine cool.
3. Triple
check to make sure you are in neutral.
4. Disconnect the battery.
5. Drain the gas.
6. Remove the console and set it aside.
7. Remove the seat.
8. Remove the gas tank.
9. Remove the left side passenger foot peg or footboard.
10. Remove the original handlebar switches according to
Harley's instructions in the cruise control kit.
11. Remove the original idle cable.
12. Install the new idle (rolloff) cable supplied by
Cruisemount.
13. Install the new handlebar switches you bought from Harley.
14. Install the Harley cruise you bought onto the
Cruisemount
mounting bracket.
15. INSTALL THE RUBBER GROMMET ON THE CRUISE CABLE!
16. Route the cruise cable to the fuel injection module and
connect.
17. Mount the Cruisemount cruise mounting bracket and
cruise
control to the motorcycle.
18. Route the Cruisemount wiring harness and carefully make
all connections.
19. Reinstall
the fork nut cover.
20. Reinstall the gas tank
21. reinstall the console
22. Connect the battery
23. Reinstall the seat
24. Add gas
25. Go cruise. |

SAMPLE
You will receive about 40 pages
with pictures along every step of the way. Following is only a sample
of the level of the detail. This is NOT
the complete installation instructions, only a sample
so you can see the level of detail.

|
One
important step according to Harley's instructions is to place
something in this space in this brake lever to protect the switch or
the master cylinder.
Critical point As
you replace the right side switches, you will be replacing the idle
cable with the new one that Cruisemount supplies you with. This
cable contains a safety (roll-off) switch. Some light oil or
WD-40 helps to get the old cable out. Note the routing of the
original cable before you remove it. This is explained more below.
|
|
|
|
Put
the three rubber grommets into the three middle holes in the
Cruisemount mounting bracket as shown.
(your mounting bracket is chrome)
|
|
|

|
This
is the approximate area where the cruise cable enters the motorcycle.
It is in front of, and
above the rear head, to the rear and right of the upper engine mounting
bracket. The cable goes under the backbone then down to the fuel
injection module. Do not bend
the
cable sharply or damage will occur. Route the
cruise cable
under
the backbone and above the head, to the right of the upper engine mount
as shown.
|
|
|

|
Use
something that won't damage the chrome or paint between the frame and
the chrome bracket to hold the bracket away from the bike as shown,
while you
slip the cruise control mounting bracket in-between the frame and the
chrome bracket. When it is in properly it will be a little
loose fitting.
|
|
|

|
Insert the cable
through the slot in the fuel injection module as shown.
|
|
|

|
Then from the
left side, one connector at a time,
bring them up under the frame and out in this area. You must get
them
turned just right and force them through the opening. Bring all
the wires through. The large connector that plugs into the cruise
control will
not go through from the top, so all wires must come up from the
bottom. If
you choose this way, route the wires and replace the bracket.
Tighten all bolts.
|
|
|

|
Go to the right
side, open up
the plastic wire keeper, install all the right side wires and close it
up.
|
|
|

|
This is the new idle (roll off) cable
that you installed earlier. This is a view of the
roll off switch. Critical
point - The orange wire with the black stripe plugs
into the rear connector on the roll-off switch. The purple wire
with the white stripe plugs into the front connector on the roll-off
switch. Apply a small amount of di-electric grease
to these connections. The cruise control will not work properly
if these two wires are reversed. It will work only once after
each ignition "on".
|
|
|

|
Critical
point - Apply a small amount of di-electric grease
to this connection. Plug the right side 6-wire connector into the
6-wire connector on the new right side handlebar switches that you
installed.
Install wire ties as necessary along the frame to hold all wires in
place. check that everything is in the proper position.
Note. There are two new wires on the left side that will be connected
after the gas tank is installed. They should be routed to the top
along with all the other console wires on the left side.
Reinstall the gas
tank. We will come back to the console wires later.
|
|
|
 |
Locate this wire
in the original
wiring (2003 and earlier). It is above the gas tank in the
console area. The
wire is pink. If you have installed the new speedometer and tach
combination, you plugged the new speedometer into this
wire. If not, it was an unused connector.
If you installed the accessory tachometer and keep the original
speedometer, you may have cut this end off during that installation as
you were instructed. If you cut this end off, you will need to
solder it back on (recommended) or solder this connection.
